KU running back James Sims suspended for DUI arrest.

|

Kansas running back James Sims has been suspended for the first three games of the Jayhawks’ season following his arrest on Sunday for DUI.

KU coach Charlie Weis announced Monday that Sims was suspended for a violation of team rules.

“Every player on our team knows and understands our rules and regulations,” Weis said. “They also know the consequences for violations.”

According to Douglas County records, James Sims was picked up by KU campus police after 2 a.m. for DUI in the 1300 block of Jayhawk Boulevard. Sims, 20, posted $500 bond and a municipal court date has been set for April 25.

Sims, a native of Irving, Texas, rushed for a team-high 727 yards and nine touchdowns on 182 carries while starting all 12 games in 2011. Those numbers came after he led the team with 742 yards as a freshman in 2010. He was listed as a starter on the first depth chart of the spring.

Since Sims is under 21 years of age, he faces laws different than the standard legal limit of .08 for people over the age of 21. Kansas has a "zero tolerance" law for minors. In Kansas it is illegal for a person under the age of 21 to operate a vehicle with a blood alcohol of .02 or more. If you are under the age of 21 and you submit to a test and your alcohol concentration is determined to be .08 or greater, your driving privileges may be suspended for one year. If you are under the age of 21 and test between .02 and .08 you may be suspended for 30 days and restricted thereafter for 330 days on the first occurrence and one year on the second occurrence.

This definitely isn't the type of news KU fans are excited to hear about their new revamped football program, and star running back.
