According to a recent story in the Washington Post over the last decade drunk driving arrests for women have gone up a staggering 36 percent. These stats are from a recent study done by the Traffic Injury Research Foundation.
So women, in case you are thinking about having a glass of wine or two before taking your kid to practice, here’s more to damper the idea: The study also found that the average female drunk driver is older and better educated than her male counterparts. They also tend to hold lower-paying jobs and be primary caregivers to children.
The study was funded by the association, The Century Council, and was triggered by an accident that got national publicity in 2009 when a mother, Diane Schuler, drove down the wrong side of a street. She caused a crash that killed herself, her daughter, her three nieces and three men in another car. It was later determined that she had been drunk as well as high on drugs.
Obviously Schuler’s was a very extreme case, but it brought a lot of attention to the fact that some parents drink while caring for their children. Though this story was sad, the news left many parents thinking that her drinking shared no resemblance to their own. A glass or two of wine during the day didn’t seem in the same league. This study just brings to light the fact that mothering and drinking may be a more common problem.
